The name of the glass first appeared in a late 19th-century advertisement for the absinthe producer Pernod Fils, which featured its local newspaper from Pontarlier, France (see photo above). The sleepy little town of Pontarlier was once the world's largest manufacturer of absinthe and the headquarters for those considered the best absinthe makers in the world. Pernod Fils, considered the best of the best, was the first to start production there.

The glass is made in the same proportions as an original piece, including the reservoir. The reservoir is where the absinthe is poured and measured. The reservoirs of absinthe glasses tend to vary greatly depending on the size of the glass. As absinthe is prepared to one's taste, the ratio of absinthe to water generally ranges from 1 part absinthe to 3–5 parts water.

Mouth-blown glass.

Measures approximately 14 cm high.

The rim is approximately 8.2 cm in diameter.

The foot is approximately 7.9 cm in diameter.

Holds approximately 26.5 cl.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0993/9170/1340/files/1435_Pontarlier_Glass_uncut-GIMP-new__49114__43694.jpg?v=1787555299
verre-a-absinthe-coupe
Absinthe Coupe Glass

This reproduction glass is one of the most interesting of all antique absinthe glasses. The size of the reservoir generally correlates with the size of the glass used, as the water-to-absinthe ratio varies by drinker (typically 3 to 5 parts water to 1 part absinthe).
