J.P. Pernot Absinthe Carton

This is a Belle Époque advertising card for J.P. Pernot absinthe extract, a Franche-Comté brand distinct from the giant Pernod Fils (Pontarlier, now Pernod Ricard) and the Les Fils d’Émile Pernot distillery (founded in Pontarlier in 1889).

The brand

J.P. Pernot belongs to the proliferation of absinthe houses in Franche-Comté at the end of the 19th century. The name Pernot (with a t) is not the same as Pernod (with a d), even if both families come from the same region and the similar names have long caused confusion—and served marketing purposes.
