circa 1900
Premier Fils is an absinthe created in Romans-sur-Isère (Drôme) in 1882 by Louis-Philippe Premier (1836-1908), son of the liquorist François Premier (established in 1829 under the name Premier Aîné).
Large factory in the Germançon district from 1886. Around 1908, production reached approximately 5 million liters: one of the largest French brands, exported to mainland France, the colonies, and abroad. It also offered an "oxygenated" version. In 1902, the company became Premier Fils, Charles Henry et Cie.
The pun "Un Premier" was deliberately intended to compete with "Un Pernod." "Hors concours" (non-competing) means that the brand had already won medals and no longer participated in competitions.
Enameled sign in tricolor colors, printed by J. Barbarin, Place Croix-Paquet in Lyon, typical of café signs around 1900-1914.
