Lithographed advertising ashtray for La Chanoinesse
The liqueur was marketed under the name La Chanoinesse de l’abbaye de Bouxières-aux-Dames (or simply La Chanoinesse). It was presented as a digestive liqueur made from stomachic herbs harvested on the mountain, according to an ancient recipe attributed to the canonesses' abbey of Bouxières-aux-Dames (near Nancy), a noble chapter of ladies founded in the 10th century and dissolved during the Revolution.
