The lid is adorned with the classic "pineapple" finial and is removable to add ice water to the glass bowl, which includes a water filter. The pineapple represents hospitality and friendship. The glass bowl is mouth-blown and the fountain is handmade.
Absinthe fountains were mainly used in high-end bars due to their high price. They were brought to the table, where the customer would prepare the absinthe themselves. Absinthe fountains were (and still are) the preferred way to prepare absinthe, because you can perfectly control the water flow. But unfortunately, due to accidents, very few fountains have survived intact with their original glass bowl.
The correct way to use it is to pour an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, then place an absinthe spoon over the glass and a sugar cube on the spoon. Remove the lid from the fountain and add fresh water and ice cubes into the glass bowl. The tap is turned slightly and the ice-cold water slowly drips from the fountain onto the sugar cube. The cold, sugar-sweetened water then drips from the spoon into the absinthe glass, thus releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood, and anise. The combination also begins to turn a milky white color as the water mixes with the anise. Refresh the water before each use.
The fountain can accommodate 1 to 4 people at a time. The drink ratio varies from 1 part absinthe to 3 to 5 parts water, depending on individual preference.
