Small lithographed tin matchbox, also known as a match holder. Advertisement for Rhum du Marin, S. Garineau distillery in Bordeaux.
Late 19th century (circa 1890-1900), Belle Époque / fin de siècle.
The Rhum du Marin brand was registered on January 20, 1891 by Jean-Sylvain (or Sylvain-Jean) Garineau, a merchant in Bordeaux. Advertisements for the brand already existed around 1890, in a chromolithographic style very characteristic of that period (bright colors, tropical/colonial theme, detailed illustrations).
This type of small promotional tin box (often for matches or as a promotional item) was very common at the time for spirits and colonial products.
