Lithographed tin sign for Poivrossage pepper
Poivrossage is a brand of packaged pepper sold in triangular sachets for 1 franc, presented as "the real pepper."
The slogan emphasizes authenticity at a time when culinary pepper was often adulterated (flour, starch, bark, other berries). The name plays on "poivrage" (peppering): the act of adding pepper, but also a guarantee of genuine pepper.
Grocery advertisement: smiling cook, red and gold packet, "On sale here" notice. An advertising card dated 1932 (printed by Gossart, Paris) exists at the Forney Library; the tin sign is of the same type, 1920s-1930s.
A mass-market brand rather than a prestigious spice house: it disappeared with the modernization of grocery stores and post-war industrial packaging.
