Izarra is an iconic Basque Country liqueur, whose name means "star" in Basque (Euskara).
Created in 1906 in Hendaye by botanist and pharmacist Joseph Grattau, it is inspired by an old formula dating back to 1835. Production was later moved to Bayonne. A symbol of the Basque Country, Izarra enjoyed great success in the 20th century, including abroad thanks to Basque emigrants. The brand belonged to Cointreau for a time before being acquired; it is now distributed by the Vedrenne group and produced in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
